What an AI-moderated interview platform does
An AI-moderated interview platform replaces the human moderator in a qualitative session. You write a discussion guide, or have AI draft one, and an AI moderator conducts each interview. It asks your questions, listens to the answers, and asks adaptive follow-ups, such as, "You mentioned the export failed. What were you trying to export?"
Automated moderation reduces scheduling and moderator-time constraints. Interviews can run in parallel, subject to each platform's language support, and sessions are transcribed and analyzed automatically.
The method combines open-ended conversation and follow-up probing with parallel execution. It does not provide the judgment or rapport of a live researcher, so moderator configurability, interview quality, and evidence-linked analysis are important evaluation criteria.
How to evaluate these tools
Use five dimensions to compare the platforms.
Interview modes. Text, voice, and video produce different data and different completion rates. Text is low-friction and easy to skim; voice captures tone and may elicit longer answers; video records facial expressions and provides clips for stakeholders. If you plan to run all three, confirm that the platform supports them. See choosing an interview mode for the trade-offs.
Question types. Interview-only platforms treat every question as an open conversation. That's fine for pure discovery, but most real studies mix qualitative and quantitative: a screener, an NPS or rating scale, a ranking exercise, then the conversational core. If you want one study to replace a survey plus an interview, count the structured question types.
Recruiting. Every platform gives you a share link for your own audience. The differences: does it have a built-in participant panel, can you embed the interview in your product, does it handle screeners, quotas, and incentives? See how to recruit research participants for the trade-offs.
Analysis. All of these tools transcribe and summarize. Look harder at theme extraction across interviews, quote attribution (can you trace every claim back to a timestamped quote?), charts for quantitative questions, report and highlight-reel generation, and raw exports.
Integrations. APIs, webhooks, embed SDKs, Figma import, and connections to AI assistants determine whether the tool fits your workflow or becomes another silo.

Versive
Versive is an AI-powered research platform that combines AI-moderated studies with real participants and AI-simulated usability tests in one tool. For interviews specifically, it runs text, voice, and video modes. Its studies mix conversational AI questions with 20+ structured question types, including NPS, rating and matrix scales, ranking, card sorts, allocation, Figma prototype tasks, and media upload. See the full question types docs.
The AI moderator is configurable: personality and guidelines, a quality mode for depth interviews or a fast mode for short studies, per-question follow-up limits, and optional question rephrasing so the conversation flows naturally. AI follow-up questions covers how the probing works in practice. Studies support conditional branching, screen-out logic, quotas, device enforcement, and translation into 20 languages.
For recruiting, you can share a link, send email outreach, embed the interview in your product with the @getversive/embed SDK, or recruit through integrated Prolific and Respondent providers. Analysis includes cross-interview themes, sentiment, timestamped quote attribution, auto-generated charts, PDF reports, and CSV export. A REST API, webhooks, and an MCP server let AI assistants like Claude build studies and query results. Versive is SOC 2 Type 2 certified and offers a free trial.
Versive is a broad platform rather than a single-method specialist. Teams focused exclusively on video interviews with emotion analytics should compare its capabilities with those of video-first vendors.
Outset
Outset is an established platform for AI-moderated research. It runs interviews by video, voice, and text, supports 40+ languages, and lets researchers configure probing depth and guidance for conversational questions. Its synthesis layer produces summaries, themes, quotes, highlight reels, and presentation-ready decks, and it recruits through more than 25 panel integrations, including Prolific and User Interviews. It offers custom standard and enterprise subscription plans without public price amounts.
Listen Labs
Listen Labs offers AI-led interviews by video, audio, or text and a built-in participant network. The company positions results as arriving within about a day. Its Research Agent generates highlight reels, slide decks, executive summaries, and charts, and studies can test stimuli including images, videos, landing pages, and Figma prototypes. Consumer brands evaluating large interview samples should compare its audience feasibility and turnaround with other vendors.
Conveo
Conveo specializes in AI-led video and voice interviews with multi-signal analysis. It analyzes tone, pace, and facial expressions alongside the transcript. Recruiting supports CSV lists, external panels, QR codes, and WhatsApp invites, and a chat-style interface lets researchers query completed interviews. Its video signals may be relevant when they matter more to the method than breadth of question types.
Strella
Strella is an AI-moderated customer research platform that puts effort into the operational side: interview guides, participant recruitment, study availability controls, and incentives, plus panel sourcing. Interviews adapt in real time, and analysis includes a chat interface that can answer questions and cut highlight reels from sessions.
Dialogue AI
Dialogue AI raised its seed round in late 2025 and is built around live, adaptive AI-led conversations. Participants can react to images, video, GIFs, Figma files, and live websites during the interview. Studies run in 30+ languages, and the platform carries enterprise compliance including SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, and HIPAA. The stated HIPAA compliance may be relevant to teams in regulated industries.

Frequently asked questions
What is an AI-moderated interview?
An AI-moderated interview is a research session where an AI moderator asks your questions, listens to each answer, and probes with adaptive follow-ups. No human moderator is required. Participants respond by text, voice, or video, and every session is transcribed and analyzed automatically.
Are AI-moderated interviews as good as human-moderated ones?
They trade some human rapport and judgment for parallel execution and consistency. A skilled human moderator may handle sensitive topics and unexpected tangents more effectively. AI moderation avoids assigning a researcher to every session, but quality and cost vary by platform and study design.
Which AI-moderated interview tools support voice and video?
Most major platforms now go beyond text. Versive, Outset, Listen Labs, and Conveo all support voice and video sessions, and Strella and Dialogue AI also run spoken conversational interviews. Check each vendor for current mode support.
Can I interview my own customers instead of using a panel?
Yes. Every platform in this comparison lets you share a link with your own audience. Additional options vary and may include built-in panels, in-product embeds, email outreach, and screening or quota controls.
How many interviews should an AI-moderated study include?
Typically more than a traditional study because the marginal cost per interview is low. The appropriate sample depends on the audience, method, theme saturation, and quotas.
